5mm dot grid paper — Letter

PDF: up to 100 pages with duplex & page numbers. PNG: 150 & 300 DPI for tablet notes. SVG: infinite vector resolution for design tools.

Make your first print a good one.

Horizontal and vertical spacing are independent distances between dot centers. Major guides are optional; use a darker dot color if a light test print is hard to see.

Match the printer paper size to your Letter document, choose Actual Size or 100%, and turn off fit-to-page. Print one test sheet before making multiple copies.

Good to know

Will the spacing print at its exact size?

The PDF uses exact physical dimensions. Printer scaling can change the result. Enable the 50mm check marker and measure a test print.

Can I change the paper size?

Yes. Choose Letter, A4, A5, Legal, or custom dimensions in Page setup. Spacing stays the same.

Where are my saved papers stored?

Saved papers stay in this browser. Export a JSON backup to keep an independent copy.

A GUIDE TO YOUR PAPER

About dot grid paper: quiet guides for journals and sketches

Dot grid paper uses regularly spaced points instead of continuous lines. The dots can help align writing, boxes, lists, and rough drawings while leaving much of the page visually open. It is useful for a journal spread, a planner page, or a sketch that needs a reference without a full square grid. This tool lets you choose horizontal spacing, vertical spacing, dot diameter, and color independently.

This page starts with Letter paper (215.9 × 279.4mm), 15mm page margins, and portrait orientation. The editor above shows your current configuration.

Working with this Letter 5mm dot grid sheet

This preset configures US Letter paper with a uniform 5mm square dot grid across the entire printable area. A 5mm dot interval provides a balanced framework for bullet journaling, wireframing, habit trackers, and freeform sketches. The dots are printed in a subtle neutral tone with a default diameter of 0.55mm, remaining clearly visible during sketching without intruding on finished drawings or ink writing.

Because US Letter measures 215.9 by 279.4mm, this format offers significantly more working surface than compact notebook inserts. It is ideal for three-ring binders, discbound notebooks, and loose-leaf project folders. Count five grid intervals for an exact 25mm measurement when drawing structural tables or calendars. You can modify dot diameter, line color, and margin width in the editor to suit your preferred pens and printing hardware.

What a dotted page makes easier to arrange

A row of dots can provide a baseline for a short heading, while several columns can guide the edges of a box or a list. You decide which points to use and which to ignore. That flexibility suits pages that mix words, simple diagrams, and open space. A dotted sheet does not impose fixed sections, so two people can use the same configuration for quite different layouts.

Before filling a journal page, sketch its main divisions lightly. Count the dot intervals available across the writing area, leave room for headings, and consider where a binding will sit. The dots are reference marks, not completed checklists or calendar cells. If you want repeated ready-made sections rather than drawing them yourself, a constrained composition in the layout builder may be a better starting point.

Spacing describes the distance between dot centers

Horizontal spacing measures the distance from one dot center to the next along a row. Vertical spacing measures the distance between neighboring rows. When both values match, the dots form a square lattice. When the values differ, the reference becomes rectangular. The dot diameter is a separate measurement, so making each point larger does not increase the interval between its center and the next one.

A 5mm grid is a convenient starting point for many small layouts, but it is not a required journaling standard. Larger intervals provide a more open page and fewer reference points. Smaller intervals give finer alignment and more counting positions, but may be crowded for larger handwriting. Use your intended writing and drawing tools on a test sheet before deciding how much structure the page needs.

Balance dot size, contrast, and optional major guides

The dots should remain visible enough to follow without dominating your own marks. Increasing diameter makes each point occupy more space; choosing a darker color increases its contrast with the white sheet. Those settings can compensate for a printer that loses pale detail, but they also change the appearance of the finished page. Check a small printed sample rather than judging contrast only from a backlit screen.

Major guides are optional horizontal reference lines at a chosen interval of dot rows. They can make larger groups easier to find when drawing sections across a page. Leave the interval at zero for a plain dot-only layout. Turning guides on does not change the underlying dot spacing, so any boxes you draw by counting intervals keep their intended physical dimensions.

Choose a page format that fits your notebook

A5 provides a smaller sheet for compact journal pages, while Letter or A4 offers more room for a spread, a larger drawing, or classroom planning. Changing the sheet size changes how many dots fit inside the margins; the chosen dot interval is preserved. Landscape gives a wider working area, which can be helpful for planning across several columns or drawing a horizontal sequence.

If you intend to punch or bind the sheet, leave clearance along the binding edge. An additional gutter can reserve that space, and mirrored gutters can alternate it between pages in a PDF. Check your printing order and duplex setup before assembling a notebook. The generator supplies the layout; it does not determine how a printer flips a sheet or how a particular binder holds it.

Count intervals carefully when drawing your own sections

The distance between the first and sixth dot centers is five intervals, not six. On a 5mm dot grid, that span is 25mm. This distinction matters when you are planning equal boxes or matching an insert to a measured space. Count the gaps between reference points when you need a physical dimension, and leave a little working room around handwriting or decorative borders.

A square grid may be preferable when the full edges of each cell need to stay visible. Lined paper gives a stronger continuous baseline for long passages, while Cornell notes provide ready-made sections for cues and a summary. Dot paper sits between those choices: it gives you a repeatable framework but leaves the divisions of the finished page largely up to you.

Download and print without changing the measurements

Use PDF for a clean printable file with vector lines and the selected physical page size. Match the loaded paper to the document, choose Actual Size or 100%, and disable automatic fit or shrinking. The on-screen preview is scaled, so it is not a physical ruler. Print one test sheet before preparing multiple copies, and measure the optional 50mm check marker if you need to check scaling.

SVG provides one editable vector sheet, while PNG supplies a single raster image at a documented 150 DPI. Other apps may assign an imported image a different physical size. For predictable printing, prefer the PDF and follow the printing guide. The file can preserve measurements, but the site cannot change printer-driver settings or verify a physical print.

HELP FOR YOUR NEXT PRINT

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about paper layouts, measurements, notebook inserts, and printing.

What dot grid spacing should I use for a bullet journal?

A 5mm dot spacing is the universal gold standard for bullet journaling and daily planning. It provides sufficient reference structure for tables, habit trackers, and calendars while remaining subtle enough to disappear behind handwriting and sketches.

Try the 5mm dot grid preset

How do I change dot diameter and dot color for printing?

Under Dot grid settings, use Dot diameter to choose between fine 0.4mm dots or bolder 0.8mm markers. In the Appearance panel, select soft gray or pastel tones so the dots guide your pen without competing with black or colored ink notes.

Customize dot grid size

Can I customize horizontal and vertical dot spacing independently?

Yes. The editor allows independent configuration of horizontal spacing and vertical dot spacing (spacingY). This allows you to generate specialized rectangular dot matrices for textile charting or custom typography layouts.
