Make your first print a good one.

Put prompts in the cue column, take notes in the main area, and summarize below. Cue width and summary height are physical measurements, independent of ruling spacing.

Match the printer paper size to your Letter document, choose Actual Size or 100%, and turn off fit-to-page. Print one test sheet before making multiple copies.

Good to know

Will the spacing print at its exact size?

The PDF uses exact physical dimensions. Printer scaling can change the result. Enable the 50mm check marker and measure a test print.

Can I change the paper size?

Yes. Choose Letter, A4, A5, Legal, or custom dimensions in Page setup. Spacing stays the same.

Where are my saved papers stored?

Saved papers stay in this browser. Export a JSON backup to keep an independent copy.

A GUIDE TO YOUR PAPER

About Cornell notes paper: cues, notes, and a summary

Cornell notes paper separates a sheet into a narrow cue column, a larger notes area, and a summary section along the bottom. The arrangement can help keep different parts of a study page distinct without requiring you to draw the divisions each time. This generator makes those sections adjustable and lets the main notes area use lines, dots, or a blank background. The printed page is a framework you can adapt to your own process.

This page starts with Letter paper (215.9 × 279.4mm), 15mm page margins, and portrait orientation. The editor above shows your current configuration.

Working with this classic Cornell notes template

This preset provides an authentic Cornell note-taking format on US Letter paper with college-ruled lines in the central notes area. The left cue column is configured at 60mm wide, leaving a dedicated column for keywords, study questions, and review prompts. At the foot of the page, a 50mm summary area provides a structured container to distill the primary concepts of the lecture or reading session.

The primary notes column uses standard 7.14375mm horizontal ruling, matching college-ruled notebook paper for familiar handwriting density. This layout encourages active listening and methodical review during academic courses, business meetings, and self-study. Before exporting your PDF, you can adjust column widths, summary height, or switch the notes area to dot grid or blank mode depending on whether your subject requires formulas, diagrams, or prose.

Give each part of the page a clear purpose

The main area provides room for the detail you want to record: an explanation, an example, a reading response, or a sequence of ideas. The cue column can hold prompts, keywords, references, or questions related to those notes. The bottom section offers a separate place to write a short summary. Those roles are suggestions for using the layout, not fields that the software fills automatically.

You can adapt the same structure beyond a classroom. In a meeting, cues might become follow-up questions or topic labels, with the summary reserved for a short recap. For reading, the main area can contain observations and the cue column can identify pages or themes. Decide on your own convention before beginning so that the different sections remain easy to interpret when you review them later.

Adjust the cue column to the length of your prompts

Cue column width is a physical measurement across the page. A wider cue area gives longer questions or references more room, but leaves less horizontal space for the main notes. A narrow column may be enough for brief keywords. Choose the balance according to what you actually expect to place there, rather than making every section as large as possible at once.

The page margins are separate from this column. Increasing a margin or a binding gutter reduces the total usable width before the cue and notes areas are divided. On a smaller sheet, a cue width that worked on Letter may leave too little notes space. The editor validates those dimensions and asks for a different combination when the remaining area becomes too small to use.

Reserve summary space without losing the whole page

Summary height measures the bottom section independently of the cue width. A taller section can accommodate a longer recap or several conclusions, while a shallower section leaves more vertical room for detailed notes. It does not increase the overall paper size. When you change this value, the horizontal divider moves within the available writing area, and the rest of the layout adjusts around it.

Think about the finished task rather than just the empty preview. If you usually write only two summary sentences, reserving a large bottom block may leave unused space. If you want a fuller end-of-page reflection, a larger section may be useful. Print a sample and try a realistic amount of writing in each area before using the configuration for a longer set of lessons or meetings.

Choose lined, dotted, or blank main notes

Lined notes provide continuous horizontal guides for passages of handwriting. Their spacing is controlled separately from the cue column and summary dimensions. Dotted notes offer reference points for lists, boxes, and mixed arrangements. A blank notes area leaves the most open space for diagrams or handwriting that does not need a guide. The outer section boundaries remain present in each mode.

Changing the notes background does not add prewritten questions, labels, or content. You still decide how to use the blank sections. If a page is mostly a measured drawing, square graph paper may provide a better reference. If you want a simpler ruled page without compartments, ordinary lined paper avoids the fixed divisions. Cornell paper is useful when the separation itself supports how you want to record and revisit information.

Make a consistent set of study or meeting sheets

Select the sheet size before fine-tuning the sections. Letter and A4 offer different usable areas, while A5 creates a compact page with less room for both cues and notes. Landscape can suit wider diagrams, but changes the proportions available above the summary. The actual measurements in the editor are more informative than the apparent size of a preview displayed on a particular screen.

A title, date, subject, or name field can identify a class or project when needed. Leave them disabled for a reusable blank sheet. Save a configuration locally after finding a comfortable arrangement, or add a snapshot to a paper pack alongside lined and graph sheets. Check mixed sizes before exporting a pack so that the final file matches the paper and printer settings you intend to use.

Download and print without changing the measurements

Use PDF for a clean printable file with vector lines and the selected physical page size. Match the loaded paper to the document, choose Actual Size or 100%, and disable automatic fit or shrinking. The on-screen preview is scaled, so it is not a physical ruler. Print one test sheet before preparing multiple copies, and measure the optional 50mm check marker if you need to check scaling.

SVG provides one editable vector sheet, while PNG supplies a single raster image at a documented 150 DPI. Other apps may assign an imported image a different physical size. For predictable printing, prefer the PDF and follow the printing guide. The file can preserve measurements, but the site cannot change printer-driver settings or verify a physical print.

Keep a useful configuration for next time

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about paper layouts, measurements, notebook inserts, and printing.

How do I customize a Cornell notes template?

In Cornell settings, adjust Cue column width (e.g. 50mm to 65mm) and Summary section height (e.g. 40mm to 55mm). You can also switch the main notes section between lined, dotted, and blank formats to suit lecture notes or formula sketches.

Customize a Cornell notes sheet

What should be written in the left cue column versus summary?

Record detailed notes and examples in the main column during the lecture. Immediately after class, extract keywords, study questions, and core concepts into the left cue column. Later, distill the entire page into a concise two-sentence synthesis inside the bottom summary block.

Can I switch the Cornell notes body between lined, dotted, and blank?

Yes. Select lined mode for humanities and lecture transcripts, dot grid mode for math, chemistry diagrams, and engineering calculations, or blank mode for unrestrained visual mind maps and sketches.
